Membrane Day, April 14, 2025

Writer: Jeong F. KimJeong F. Kim

To honour Prof. Enrico Drioli and his prominent role in membrane science, the European Membrane Society (EMS) has chosen his birth anniversary, April 14th, as “Membrane Day”. His work in membrane technologies has made a huge impact, and April 14, 2025, is a great time to celebrate his legacy and our shared passion for membranes.

To mark the occasion, EMS invites membrane researchers worldwide to organize outreach activities between April 1 – 14, 2025. Here are some ideas:

• Plan fun membrane-related events, like quizzes or treasure hunts, with some food and social time.

• Give talks or workshops about membranes for high school and undergraduate students near your institute or workplace.

• Hold scientific gatherings to look back on how membrane science has grown over the years.

• Create any other activities that show the importance of membranes and encourage people to learn more.

This event aims to reach both experts and those who may not know much about membranes! EMS will support this effort by offering awards, including certificates of appreciation and cash prizes.

To join the competition, research groups at institutions or companies need to upload a video (up to 3 minutes) or a digital collage showing their membrane-related activities. These should be shared on any of the official EMS social media channels, including LinkedIn – European Membrane Society EMS, X (formerly Twitter) – @EUMembraneSoc, and BlueSky – @EUMembraneSoc, between April 1 – 14, 2025. Short tributes to Prof. Enrico Drioli’s legacy are welcome. Evaluation takes place soon after April 14, 2025.

The EMS council will judge entries based on:

• Creativity in organizing the event• Effort put into the event
